Mayor Jimmy Cockroft has served the City of Kosciusko as an elected official since 1993. He was born in Joliet, IL and spent his childhood in Lockport, IL. It was during his freshman year of high school that his family returned to Mississippi. After graduating from Kosciusko High School, he landed a summer job at a local building supply where he learned the true meaning of serving others both in retail and management. In 1988, he purchased Parker’s Shoe Shop on the Square in Kosciusko. Parker’s had a long history of quality shoes and shoe repair and afforded him many opportunities as a small business owner. He owned and operated the shoe store until 2005.
Mayor Cockroft is the Past President of the Mississippi Municipal League, on the Board of Directors of the MS Municipal Service Company Liability Board, the Friends of Mississippi Veterans Board of Directors and the Board of Directors for North Central Planning and Development District. He is also a member of the Kosciusko-Attala Development Corporation and is a founding member and past president of the East Central Mississippi Mayors Association. Mayor Cockroft has been a huge supporter of the Kosciusko Main Street Program and was awarded the Special Service Award by Mississippi Main Street at their annual meeting in June 2015.
Mayor Cockroft is a member of First Baptist Church in Kosciusko serving as a Deacon and a member of the Television Ministry. He is a former member of the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors, past Chairman of the Kosciusko Athletic Booster Club, member and past president of the Kosciusko Lions Club. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Kosciusko Lions Club.
He was elected to the Board of Aldermen in 1993 and has served as mayor since 1997.
Mayor Cockroft and his wife Linda, a family nurse practitioner, have 2 adult children. Mary Margaret (Will) is a CPA with C Spire and their son Sam (Amy Elizabeth) is an Agent with Shelter Insurance in Madison, MS. They are also excited to welcome their first grandchild in December 2016!
